Trip overview

The Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek leads you deep into the heart of the Khumbu, home of the Sherpa people and their rich cultural heritage. The route begins on the classic Everest Base Camp trail but diverges after Thyangboche, where you head east into a quieter, more remote valley. Here, the crowds thin out and the mountains feel even more massive. You’ll trek through peaceful landscapes surrounded by snow-capped giants, ending up at the base of the striking Ama Dablam—one of the most iconic peaks in the Himalayas.

From there, the journey continues to the twin villages of Khumjung and Khunde. These settlements offer a closer look into local Sherpa life, with opportunities to visit the historic Khumjung monastery, the famous Edmund Hillary School, and the Khunde hospital—each a legacy of Sir Edmund Hillary’s lasting impact on the region.

The adventure starts with a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a dramatic airstrip nestled in the mountains. The first leg of the trek is a gentle walk to Phakding, followed by a scenic climb to Namche Bazaar—the bustling gateway to Everest. Here, you'll spend a day acclimatizing with a hike to the Everest View Hotel, where the terrace opens up to sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse, and the vast Khumbu Valley. You may also choose to visit the Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Center for insight into the region’s unique ecosystem and cultural history.

The path continues through rhododendron and pine forests toward Thyangboche, home to the most revered monastery in the region. After soaking in the views and atmosphere here, you leave the well-trodden trail and veer into the quiet valley that leads to Ama Dablam Base Camp. This remote stretch offers solitude and up-close views of the majestic, pyramid-shaped peak. While climbing Ama Dablam is reserved for elite mountaineers, simply standing at its base is an awe-inspiring experience.

Afterward, the trail takes you to Pangboche, home to one of the oldest monasteries in the Khumbu. The spiritual energy of the place is palpable, especially with Everest towering above. From there, you continue to Phortse, a peaceful Sherpa village with expansive views of the valley and the surrounding peaks.

Next, you’ll arrive in Khumjung—aptly known as the "Green Village" for its distinct green rooftops. The restored Khumjung Monastery is worth a visit, along with the Hillary School, a cornerstone of education in the region. Founded through Hillary’s Himalayan Trust, the school has helped generations of Sherpa youth, many of whom returned as professionals—teachers, doctors, engineers—to uplift their communities.
