Trip overview

The Three Passes Trek combined with the Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek is one of the most challenging and rewarding treks in the Everest region of Nepal. This trek takes you through three high mountain passes—Kongma La Pass (5,535m), Cho La Pass (5,420m), and Renjo La Pass (5,340m)—while also visiting Everest Base Camp and other iconic locations like Gokyo Lakes and Kala Patthar.

This trek pushes you both physically and mentally, crossing glacial valleys, alpine lakes, and remote Sherpa villages, while offering unmatched views of Everest (8,848m), Lhotse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, and dozens of other Himalayan giants. Unlike the classic Everest Base Camp trek, the Three Passes route takes you off the main trail into less traveled, more remote sections of the region, giving you a real sense of Himalayan wilderness.

  • The Kongma La Pass, the highest and toughest of the three, with raw, untamed landscapes.

  • The Cho La Pass, a dramatic glacier crossing that links the Khumbu and Gokyo valleys.

  • The Renjo La Pass, often considered the most scenic, with stunning views of Gokyo Lakes and a panoramic sweep of Everest and its neighboring peaks.

  • Side trips to Everest Base Camp, Kalapatthar (for sunrise views over Everest), and Gokyo Ri, another top vantage point in the region.

This trek is not for beginners. It requires strong fitness, acclimatization discipline, and a readiness to face unpredictable mountain weather. But for experienced trekkers looking for the ultimate Himalayan journey, The team of Peak15adventure is ready to take part in the Everest Three Passes Trek delivers big on adventure, scenery, and a deep sense of achievement.

Useful information

To ensure your 20-day Everest Three Passes Trek is both safe and successful, consider these essential preparations and logistical realities.

1. Physical Conditioning & Training

The Three Passes Trek is significantly more demanding than the standard Everest Base Camp (EBC) route. You will be crossing three passes—Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m)—which require high cardiovascular endurance.

  • Cardio: Start training 3–6 months in advance. Focus on running, cycling, or stair climbing to improve lung capacity.

  • Strength: Include weighted hikes (wearing your planned pack weight) to condition your legs and core for steep, rocky ascents and descents.

  • Stamina: Practice consecutive long-distance walking days to simulate the daily grind of trekking.

2. Altitude & Health

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the biggest risk on this trek.

  • Pacing: "Pole, pole" (slowly, slowly) is the mantra. Walking too fast is a common cause of altitude failure.

  • Hydration: Drink 3–4 liters of water daily. Dehydration accelerates the onset of altitude sickness.

  • Acclimatization: Never skip scheduled acclimatization days. If you feel symptoms of altitude sickness (severe headache, nausea, dizziness), communicate with your guide immediately and be prepared to descend.

3. Gear Requirements

The weather in the high Himalayas is notoriously unpredictable, shifting from sun to snow in minutes.

  • Layering: Use a three-layer system: a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer (fleece or down), and a waterproof/windproof outer shell.

  • Footwear: Wear sturdy, broken-in trekking boots with ankle support. Bring high-quality wool socks to prevent blisters.

  • Sleeping Bag: Bring a four-season sleeping bag (rated to at least -15°C/5°F), as teahouse rooms are unheated.

  • Navigation: While guides are highly recommended for the passes, having a GPS app (like Gaia GPS or AllTrails) with offline maps can be a useful backup for orientation.

4. Trekking permits will be taking care by company peak15adventure.

5. Logistics & Buffer Days

  • Lukla Flights: Flights into Lukla are highly weather-dependent. Always build 2–3 "buffer days" into your itinerary at the end of your trip to account for potential flight delays or cancellations.

  • Cash: ATMs are virtually non-existent or unreliable above Namche Bazaar. Carry enough Nepali Rupees to cover your entire trek, including extras for charging devices, hot showers, and snacks.

  • Guides/Porters: Given the technical nature of the passes—specifically the snow-covered sections on the Cho La Pass—hiring a local, certified guide is strongly advised for navigation and safety.
